The Italian label Ermenegildo Zegna is an ideal example of a privately owned family business. The father of the company founder Angelo Zegna already owned a small weaving mill, which he christened Wollweberei Zegna, and passed it on to his son in 1923. The successful company produced mainly high-quality fabrics for suits and uniforms worldwide and was eventually renamed "Ermenegildo Zegna" to better reflect the chief designer and owner. Ermenegildo Zegna continued to build the company and passed it on to his sons Angelo and Aldo Zegna shortly before his death (1966). From 1968, the portfolio was expanded to include men's suits and, from 1972, made-to-measure collections.
